Fishing Europe Style

Fishing in ItalyLast week I had the opportunity to fish in a commercial fishery in Italy. On arrival there where around 50 people at this pay for fishing venue near Stresa in the foothills of the alps. There has been much discussion both within KLAA and the national press on the attack on fisheries from european anglers. Well this visit to see how they fish at home was a real eye opener.

The price to fish was 16 Euros for a day ticket which also included an option to take up to 4 kilos of fish. This is properly not usual to the many trout fisheries in the UK, but this was a mixed fishery with trout, carp, catfish and other things I couldn't identify. People came with trolleys of all types and varieties all designed to carry their catch and not the gear as in the UK.

Yes there was the same bank side banter we get or used to get in the good old days back at home, with many people stopping to have a beer or two or lunch with wine for 6.5 Euros, we could certainly learn a thing or too on that front.

But the sad event for me was the guy who caught a 8-10lb carp, with a great audience as he struggled to land it on his telescopic outfit. Only to knock it on the head and take his prize home with pride.

Fishing Euro StyleYou will be pleased to learn that all our catch were returned to the surprise of the locals, who thought we were mad.

Anyway with more people appearing in court for fishing out of season on our rivers, we have a long way to go when the styles of angling between the UK and Europe are so far apart.
